Strengths and limits
Why buyers choose Romania. Forest resources are large, state-managed forests are FSC-certified, and the timber is European-origin, which makes EUDR due diligence simpler than for tropical or overseas supply. Sawmilling and panel capacity is modern in the larger mills, drying capacity is widespread, and the Carpathian clusters are 4–8 hours by truck from the Hungarian border. Prices for beech and oak are competitive, and small mills are flexible on dimensions and grades.
What to watch. Wood supply is regulated: harvesting quotas, the SUMAL traceability system and periodic export restrictions on logs affect availability and price, and illegal-logging scandals mean buyers must insist on documented chain of custody. Quality is inconsistent among small sawmills; specify grading rules (EN 1611-1, EN 975-1) and moisture content on the order. Rail capacity is limited, so bulk volumes move by truck. Pellet supply tightens in winter.
How buyers work with Romanian suppliers
- Sawn timber to specification
- Species, dimensions, grade, moisture content and treatment agreed per contract; usually FCA or DAP truckloads.
- Engineered timber and panels
- Glulam, CLT, plywood and OSB made to standard or project specifications with CE marking under EN 14080 / EN 13986.
- Joinery and flooring to drawings
- Windows, doors, stairs and flooring produced to your drawings and finish specifications.
- Packaging and pallets under contract
- EPAL or custom pallets and crates delivered on call-off schedules.
Certifications and compliance to require
Certification data on imported profiles is declared, not audited: treat every certificate as a claim to verify with the issuer.
| Certificate / regulation | What it proves | When to require it |
|---|---|---|
| FSC / PEFC chain of custody | Certified sustainable sourcing | Standard requirement; verify the certificate code online and check it covers the product group. |
| EUDR (Regulation (EU) 2023/1115) | Deforestation-free, geolocated harvest | Applies to timber, panels, pallets, pellets, joinery and furniture; ask how the supplier produces due-diligence statements and reference numbers. |
| EN 14081 (CE marking of structural timber), EN 14080 (glulam), EN 16351 (CLT), EN 13986 (panels) | Structural performance and CE marking | Any wood used in construction; request the Declaration of Performance. |
| ISPM 15 | Heat treatment of wood packaging against pests | All pallets and crates shipped outside the EU; the stamp must be visible. |
| ENplus A1/A2, DINplus | Pellet quality | Any pellet purchase; check the ENplus ID on the public register. |
| Formaldehyde class E1 / E05, CARB Phase 2, TSCA Title VI | Panel emissions | Wood-based panels for furniture and interiors; CARB/TSCA for North America. |

MOQ, lead times and seasonality
Indicative figures reported by suppliers, to be confirmed per quote: one full truckload (about 20–24 t or 40–50 m³ depending on the product) is the usual minimum for timber, panels, pallets and pellets; joinery and flooring from a few hundred m² or per project. Lead times of 2–4 weeks for stock dimensions, 4–8 weeks for kiln-dried special sizes or engineered timber, 6–10 weeks for joinery to drawings.
Seasonality. Log harvesting peaks in winter and early spring; sawn-timber prices often firm in spring. Pellet contracts are best signed in Q2–Q3 before the heating season. Construction-timber demand peaks April–October.
Vetting checklist before the first order
- Confirm the legal entity. Ask for the company's CUI (fiscal code) and check registration, VAT status and the last financial statements on the Ministry of Finance and Trade Registry portals; validate the EU VAT number in VIES.
- Validate every certificate. Get the certificate number, scope and expiry, then verify with the issuing body or in IAF CertSearch. A PDF is not proof.
- Ask for references in your market. Two customers in your country or industry, or anonymised shipping documents, tell you more than any profile.
- Test capability before series. Samples, a first-article inspection report or a pilot order with your specification, packaging and labelling.
- Visit or audit. Most Romanian factories are a day trip from Central Europe; a visit or a third-party audit is the cheapest insurance on a new supplier.
- Put the terms in writing. Incoterms, payment terms, quality plan, tooling ownership, lead times and liability, before the first purchase order.

Frequently asked questions
Where are Romania's sawmills and wood processors?
In the Carpathian counties — Harghita, Suceava, Covasna, Mureș, Maramureș and Bistrița-Năsăud — plus Cluj, Bihor and the Bucharest area for panels, joinery and trading. See the county table above for live counts.
What wood products does Romania export?
Sawn spruce, fir, beech and oak timber, glulam and CLT, plywood, MDF, OSB and particleboard, windows, doors and joinery, parquet, pallets and wood pellets. Wood and wood articles (HS 44) are about 2% of Romania's goods exports, going mainly to Italy, Germany, Hungary, Austria and Turkey.
How does EUDR apply to Romanian timber?
The EU Deforestation Regulation requires a due-diligence statement with geolocation of the harvest plots for timber, panels, pallets, pellets and furniture placed on the EU market. Romanian wood is EU-origin and tracked in the national SUMAL system, which makes compliance easier than for imports, but each supplier must be able to issue the statements — ask before you order.
What is the minimum order for Romanian sawmills?
Suppliers usually quote a full truckload (about 40–50 m³ of sawn timber or 20–24 tonnes of pellets) as the minimum; mixed loads are often possible. Lead times reported are 2–4 weeks for stock sizes and 4–8 weeks for special dimensions or engineered products. Confirm per quotation.
Which certificates should a Romanian wood supplier provide?
FSC or PEFC chain of custody, EUDR due-diligence statements, CE marking under EN 14081 for structural timber (and EN 14080 or EN 16351 for glulam and CLT), ISPM 15 for packaging shipped outside the EU, ENplus for pellets and the E1 formaldehyde class for panels.
Is Romanian oak and beech competitive in price?
Yes. Romania has some of Europe's largest beech and oak resources, and hardwood prices are generally below those in Western Europe. Spruce construction timber is competitive with Poland and Austria once transport is included for buyers in Hungary, Austria, northern Italy and southern Germany.
