Strengths and limits
Why buyers choose Romania. Raw material is local and certified: Romania's beech and oak forests supply the industry, and FSC or PEFC chain-of-custody certification is common among exporters. Factories are used to retailer audits, EN test reports and long series for the same customer, and trucks reach Germany and Italy in two to three days. Costs sit between Poland and Western Europe for labour and below both for hardwood. Upholstery and solid-wood craftsmanship remain strong, and several plants offer product development from a sketch.
What to watch. The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) requires geolocation-level traceability of the wood in every product placed on the EU market; large operators are covered from the end of 2026 and small ones from mid-2027, and not every factory has its due-diligence system ready — ask. Flat-pack volume competes with Poland's very large plants, which usually win on price for pure panel furniture. Foam, hardware and fabrics are often imported, so lead times depend on those suppliers. Design capability varies; bring drawings or a clear brief.
How buyers work with Romanian suppliers
- Manufacture to your design
- You supply drawings and specifications; the factory develops prototypes, tests and produces. The standard model with retailers and contract buyers.
- Private label from the factory's range
- Existing models adapted (finish, fabric, dimensions) and delivered under your brand, common for e-commerce.
- Contract projects
- Hotel, office or hospitality fit-outs quoted per project, sometimes including installation.
- Components and semi-finished goods
- Frames, legs, panels and veneered parts for assembly elsewhere.
Certifications and compliance to require
Certification data on imported profiles is declared, not audited: treat every certificate as a claim to verify with the issuer.
| Certificate / regulation | What it proves | When to require it |
|---|---|---|
| FSC / PEFC chain of custody | Certified sustainable wood sourcing | Most retailers require it; check the certificate code on the FSC or PEFC public database. |
| EUDR (Regulation (EU) 2023/1115) | Deforestation-free, geolocated wood supply chains | Applies to wood products and furniture placed on the EU market; ask for the supplier's due-diligence statement process and reference numbers. |
| EN 1335, EN 16139, EN 12520, EN 1728, EN 14749 | Strength, durability and safety of office, contract and domestic seating and storage | Contract and retail buyers should request test reports from an accredited lab for each product family. |
| EN 71-3 / EN 716 / EN 1130 | Safety of children's furniture and cots | Any product for children. |
| Formaldehyde class E1 / EN 16516, CARB Phase 2 / TSCA Title VI | Low emissions from wood-based panels | E1 for the EU; CARB/TSCA if you sell in North America. |
| EN 1021 / Crib 5 / TB 117-2013 | Fire performance of upholstered furniture | UK contract (Crib 5) and US markets (TB 117); specify the target market early. |

Romania vs Poland, Turkey and China for furniture & goods

MOQ, lead times and seasonality
Indicative figures reported by suppliers, to be confirmed per quote: minimums are usually expressed as a mixed truckload (about 90 m³) or container, typically 50–300 units per SKU depending on the product; contract projects are quoted per project. Prototypes take 3–6 weeks, series production 6–10 weeks for solid wood and upholstery, 4–8 weeks for panel furniture; repeat orders are faster.
Seasonality. Retail orders peak from July to October for the autumn and Christmas season; garden and outdoor furniture is produced from November to March. Factories close for one to two weeks in August and over Christmas.
Vetting checklist before the first order
- Confirm the legal entity. Ask for the company's CUI (fiscal code) and check registration, VAT status and the last financial statements on the Ministry of Finance and Trade Registry portals; validate the EU VAT number in VIES.
- Validate every certificate. Get the certificate number, scope and expiry, then verify with the issuing body or in IAF CertSearch. A PDF is not proof.
- Ask for references in your market. Two customers in your country or industry, or anonymised shipping documents, tell you more than any profile.
- Test capability before series. Samples, a first-article inspection report or a pilot order with your specification, packaging and labelling.
- Visit or audit. Most Romanian factories are a day trip from Central Europe; a visit or a third-party audit is the cheapest insurance on a new supplier.
- Put the terms in writing. Incoterms, payment terms, quality plan, tooling ownership, lead times and liability, before the first purchase order.

Frequently asked questions
Where is furniture manufactured in Romania?
Beyond Bucharest–Ilfov, the strongest clusters are in Transylvania (Cluj, Mureș, Brașov) and the north (Bihor, Satu Mare, Maramureș, Harghita, Suceava, Bistrița-Năsăud), close to the beech and oak forests. The county table above gives live counts and links.
What kinds of furniture does Romania export?
Solid beech and oak furniture, upholstered sofas and chairs, office and hotel furniture, kitchens, mattresses and flat-pack panel furniture. Furniture (HS 94) is roughly 2–3% of Romania's goods exports, sold mainly to Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK.
Does the EU Deforestation Regulation affect furniture bought from Romania?
Yes. EUDR covers wood products and furniture placed on the EU market and requires a due-diligence statement with geolocation of the harvest plots. Romanian factories that source domestic FSC/PEFC wood can usually provide it, but ask each supplier how it handles due-diligence statements before you order.
What is the minimum order for Romanian furniture factories?
Suppliers typically quote a mixed truckload or container as the minimum, which translates into about 50–300 pieces per SKU; contract projects are handled per project. Prototypes are usually possible for a fee. Confirm per quotation.
Which standards should Romanian furniture meet?
FSC or PEFC chain of custody for the wood, EUDR due diligence, EN safety and durability standards for the product type (EN 1335 office chairs, EN 16139 contract seating, EN 12520 domestic seating, EN 14749 storage), E1 formaldehyde class for panels, and Crib 5 or TB 117 fire performance where your market requires it.
How long does furniture production take in Romania?
Suppliers report 3–6 weeks for prototypes, 6–10 weeks for series production of solid-wood and upholstered furniture and 4–8 weeks for panel furniture, with faster repeats. Book capacity before the July–October peak.
